Inclusion and diversity: the Pride cards

The  terms inclusion and diversity are key to a more equal society. Let’s see how the packaging world interpreted these concepts.

In this post, we’d like to talk about inclusion and diversity. Many times before we approached the topic of Pride from the point of view of packaging as a business opportunity. Today, however, we’d like to offer some broader food for thought. Traditionally, playing cards have interpreted gender identity in a perfectly binary way. On one side there are the kings, on the other the queens accompanied at most by a few jacks. However, society has evolved and we should reflect all possible orientations on an increasingly fluid background.

The interesting pride card experiment took place in India. Every single card tells an LGBTQ+ story exclusively drawn by a famous artist.

Packaging certainly captures the diversity of our society. It depicts people of different genders and sexual orientations. The basic assumption is that one should love and be loved regardless of their origin, gender identity or preference. This is why we consider this inclusive deck of cards an effective and artistic tool at the same time.

Inclusion and diversity: an Italian game

We also have an example of our own, developed in Bologna and transformed into an engaging game: Lobbies.

The latter is a strategic card game in which players compete for the dominance of their group in the LGBTQ+ world. The lobbies to choose from are hedonists, queers, upperclass and activists.

The designers are mostly gurus from the Italian comics and illustration world. The playing cards, in fact, were designed by 4 different artists, one for each lobby. We have the Activists drawn by Giopota, the Queers illustrated by Jacopo Camagni, the Upper Classes brought to life by the pencil of Flavia Biondi and the hedonists depicted by Mush Dirty Kawaii aka Rino Lionetto.

Basically, inclusion and diversity become the center of a role-playing game in which everyone puts themselves in the shoes of others to ultimately overcome stereotypes, stigma and the marginalization of the different. Crayola has done this for kids with a color palette including all possible shades of skin colors.
